what is it about sex and Porn?

Watching the clips from the movie “The Price of Pleasure” which is claims to be an unbiased look at the porn industry. But the clips are anything but unbiased. There are 3 people on there who appear to be pro-porn, pro-sex, and their words are taken and cut and juxtaposed with porn so that they seem to have no idea what they are talking about. Ernest Greene, featured in the movie comment at the Pro-porn activism blog on the movie.

Chomsky says that “women in porn are degraded.” Well, to me, that’s the age old line “women don’t like sex”.

Ernest Greene says “70% of the audience is straight men watching it alone.”  Men who are alone shouldn’t feel sexual unless they can get sex right now?

What’s so wrong with feeling sexual? What’s so wrong about solo orgasm?

The suppression of sexual feelings is the problem. Not porn. Not the porn industry.   When have you EVER been told that feeling sexual outside a monogamous, heterosexual sexual experience that it’s okay?

The porn industy is a cesspool for the most part. But, so are governments and we aren’t banning those guys. What is it that is so scary about sex?

Ariel Levy has an interesting clip about porn, fantasy and sexuality. This was the one decent clip I thought. No you won’t get sense of real sexuality from watching porn, and sadly it’s what too many people learn real sexuality is because NO one is telling them any different. NO ONE.

There seems to be some people who are talking about their first experiences with porn. Many people all around are decrying that the Internets are making porn too accessible to kids, but the generations before the Internet had their father/uncle/brother/randomly found Playboys to look at. It’s not exactly new.

A random fan is my favorite clip he says that “Pornography is fantasy”. Well duh. We don’t get worked up about TV in the same way. I don’t watch a bank robbery on random TV Show and think I should do that. I don’t watch ER and think that I should try surgery. And I don’t watch porn and think my bf should last for hours while fucking me in 8 different positions.

Jensen says (using larger words) that in a capitalist society everything is turned into a commodity. What he doesn’t say is that therefore in porn women’s bodies are turned into a commodity. (No mention of the men who are in porn either as producers or actors. Only as consumers).

Pamela Paul talks about men who have porn pop into their heads while having regular sex. Like no one ever fantasizes about someone else during sex? Like NO OTHER THOUGHTS should be in your head at all during sex? God, my sex life is a wreck. (I don’t watch porn, but I write smutty things and sometimes they seep into my head during sex).

And last but not least former sex worker Sarah Katherine Lewis talks about being an uneducated (no college education)  women in America and how her only choices were to work in McDonald’s or the sex industry. HOLY FUCK ME. Really? Well, Ms. Lewis you did choose the sex industry. Many women in the same socio-economic class choose to work retail, waitress or whatever to pay the bills.  They don’t choose sex work. They choose another crappy choice.  Life isn’t perfect, but you chose what you chose. Damn it.

We live in a society where girls (as young as 6 now!!) are being encouraged to buy padded bras, thong underwear and the shortest skirt possible, so they can be SEXY. But, no one tells them what being sexy means, the responsibilites and reprecussions of having sex, what good sex is, when they should yes and no to sex, what bad sex, what do if they have unsafe sex, the condom breaks, how to talk to their boyfriends/girlfriends about sex, that it is OKAY to have sexual feelings, masturbation, rape, personal responsibility (for girls and boys choosing to have sex).

And I won’t even get into fetish, BDSM, and open relationships.

But I’ll say this again. There is some (a lot?) of bad porn out there. But we can’t ban all porn because some of it is bad. No more than we are willing to ban guns becuase a lot of people are shooting each other. Ban books because bad ones are published and I BUY THEM. We arne’t banning chemicals even though they are a health risk. Cars aren’t being banned because they are creating pollution.

  1. SKL neglected to mention her book deals.

  2. I don’t oppose pornography from the point of view of its artistic integrity I oppose it because it is exploitative of women…like you say…that in a capitalist society everything is turned into a commodity. What he doesn’t say is that therefore in porn women’s bodies are turned into a commodity.

    It’s very implied. But …

Where do you make money in which yourself is not a commodity?
When I work as a teacher my skills at teaching people are being sold. When I work as a writer, my ability to write decent prose in a grammatically appropriate fashion is a commodity. It’s the basis of capitalism. Would I like to have a different system of life other than capitalism? Hell yes. But, until that day comes, here’s what we have to work with.

I still argue that not ALL pornography/sex work is women exploitive. Most of it? Maybe. Some of it, definetly. But all. Nope, can’t agree.

This is the basis that I defend porn. People have a right to chose to do sex work. People have a right to buy sex.
